Horatio Nelson was one of the greatest naval heroes in British history. He was born in England in 1758 and joined the navy when he was only 12 years old. As he became older, he became a skilled and brave leader. Nelson became famous during the Napoleonic Wars, a series of wars between Britain and France. In 1805, he led the British navy in the Battle of Trafalgar. His ships defeated a much larger enemy fleet, and this victory protected Britain from an invasion by France. During the battle, Nelson was seriously injured and died. However, his courage and leadership made him a national hero. Many people still respect him today, and a famous statue of Nelson stands in Trafalgar Square in London.
