Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants create their own food using sunlight. It mainly takes place in the leaves, which contain a green substance called chlorophyll. During photosynthesis, plants absorb carbon dioxide from the air and water from the ground. When sunlight hits the leaves, the energy from the light helps convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose, a type of sugar. Oxygen is also produced as a byproduct and released into the air. 光合成とは、緑色の植物が太陽の光を使って自らの栄養を作る働きのことです。主に葉で行われ、そこにはクロロフィルという緑色の物質が含まれています。光合成では、植物が空気中の二酸化炭素と地面から吸収した水を取り入れます。葉に太陽の光が当たると、そのエネルギーを使って二酸化炭素と水をグルコース（糖の一種）に変えます。そして副産物として酸素が作られ、空気中に放出されます。このしくみは、植物だけでなく、動物や人間にとっても重要です。なぜなら、私たちが呼吸するために必要な酸素を作り出してくれるからです。また、植物が作るグルコースは成長のためのエネルギー源となり、食物連鎖の土台にもなります。光合成がなければ、地球上の生命は存在できません。
